Wade in the Water is an African American spiritual. Spirituals are songs that were created and sung by Africa American slaves. They form the basis of much blues and gospel music. The lyrics for this song go “Wade in the Water, Wade in the Water Children, Wade in the Water, God’s Gonna Trouble the Water.” These lyrics refer to the biblical story of the Pool of Siloam, where Jesus healed a blind man. But the song is also said to have been a secret coded message giving instructions to fugitive slaves to get off the path and into the water so that the slave-catchers’ dogs couldn’t track their scent. What a fascinating and troubling story to contemplate.
Tim, this is beautiful! I love this Spiritual! We sang it in our MLK service this year! Your version is uplifting and hopeful! Thanks for sharing!
