Ever wonder what it means to improvise in music? Are we sitting down and making everything up? In this video, I talk about what is going on and how learning to improvise is really similar to learning to speak another language. When we improvise, we depend on our ability to hear an idea in our head and play it on our instrument simultaneously. That takes lots of practice but it also helps to know something about music theory. It’s very similar to speaking, where we form a thought in our head and express it verbally, relying on what we know about vocabulary, grammar, and syntax.
